Red alerts over the Mindanao grid
On September 8–9, 2026, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines hoisted alternating red and yellow alerts over the Mindanao grid. Available capacity fell to roughly 2,641 MW against a peak demand of 2,591 MW — a margin of barely 50 MW between keeping the lights on and rotating brownouts.
Why Northern Mindanao is exposed
- Therma Marine Mobile 2, the diesel power barge in Agusan del Norte, is running at derated capacity.
- Minergy Coal Unit 2 tripped unexpectedly, slicing another 50 MW from the grid.
- Around 30 plants are unavailable or derated — 15 offline this month, 15 since 2024, and 8 running below rated capacity — a combined loss of about 827.7 MW.
- In Cagayan de Oro, CEPALCO has appealed to consumers to conserve power during extreme heat to help avoid rotational power interruptions.
A red alert means available supply is insufficient to meet demand — the condition under which the grid may resort to manual load dropping, or unscheduled power interruptions.
What this means for homes and businesses
Rotational interruptions hurt most where they aren't planned: refrozen food, dead routers, halted production lines, dark clinics.
| Backup need | Good fit |
|---|---|
| Lights, Wi-Fi, phones, fans | VEXPRO BP C3 / BP A6 |
| Refrigerator + workstation | VEXPRO BP T11 |
| Whole essential-loads circuit | VEXPRO BP T20 |
| Small business, clinic, sari-sari | VEXPRO BP T30 |
Pair a power station with solar panels and brownouts stop being emergencies — you recharge by day and run through the night.
